Emergency Sub Plan

This is an idea that I have used specifically for my "emergency" sub plan.  It's great because you don't need a "music" sub in order for the students to learn music while you are absent!

Pair-n-share: Students sit with a partner.  Each student gets their own folder to read. They silently read for any given time (10 minutes?), then on the teachers direction the students turn to their neighbor and share one or two things they learned. They pass the folders to the next pair. Then it repeats - read/share read/share.

I wanted to find articles that are about composers, instruments, and theory that are kid friendly.  I found a wonderful little magazine called Piano Explorer (subscription is cheap). I collected them for awhile and when I had enough to make a class set of folders I tore the pages apart.  I went through each magazine and picked out the articles that I wanted. I put a page on each side of a file folder.  Sometimes there were two small articles I fit on one side. I laminated the file folders. They stay nice and they are easy to store, and easy for a sub to use. Plus the kids learn something too!

The hardest part was getting enough articles, it took a little time but so worth it. I am sure there are other sources and places you could pull from.  I liked these colorful pictures and articles.  I didn't want the look of photo copies for this project.

I love having these folders. The  kids like them too. It gives them a chance to learn some things that I will never get around to teaching. It also works as a great review and "connection" when they read and see things that they have learned.
